Response to Course material 10/23/11

Im glad that we finally started reading something. If i had to ac one more packet about essay writing i would have exploded. I like the American Dream, but i dont love it. I wish we could have started off our year with a less dense work. Still though, i like working through it, but i think that when we discuss it as a class without a teacher who knows whats going on, we tend to get lost or misguided. Also, i think in general people are trigger happy with the analysis. I'm pretty excited for death of a salesman, and I will certainly be playing review games for the test on friday, which is a method that works surprisingly well for me.

  1. Your response is quite short and it only touches on what we have been doing recently. You may want to expand on your interpretations of "The American Dream" and what you may have gained from the work. What are some of the emerging themes that you have noticed? What about motifs and symbols? Would you be in favor of the Ms. Holmes leading the discussions rather than allowing us to talk about what we feel is worth noting? If so, why? You may want to expand on your reflection of "The American Dream" along these lines.

With regards to the literary terms, how do you think they are going to helpful in the future? What is you opinion of learning these words without practically applying them?

  2. I was SO glad we finally started reading something too, but I agree with what you said about it being a bit dense to start with. Especially because we were just introduced to DIDLS, it's hard to then jump into a play layered with symbols and multiple themes. I still don't feel as though I had a good overall grasp on "The American Dream", more like bits and pieces of things that sort of make sense. And yes, sometimes our class does get lost with a lot of people talking at once and not a lot of connection going on. Anyway, I like this response! Very honest and genuine. However, what is "trigger happy"?
